Summary

This is a design system I created for Itemize, a tech start up focusing on security and verification of electronic devices. Being a smaller and younger company, employees need to be able to complete different tasks quickly and efficiently. A design system allows people to rapidly prototype in high-fidelity at all experience levels.

Essentials

  • Accessibility in design is integral to creating a positive user experience across all possible demographics.

  • Itemize is a young company and constantly expanding so it needs a design system that can be manipulated to fit new applications

  • The design system needs to create components that are compatible and uniquely Itemize

Consistency through type

Creating a strong foundation through typography is important to maintain consistency and control hierarchy. When new features need to be built it is crucial to have typography as a base.

Contrast through color

Contrast ratios are just as important as brand identity when dealing with digital interfaces. The focus was to incorporate the Itemize color palette and ensure its applications meet WCAB standards.

Direction through spacing

Grids and spacing are important to this design system as it is used by all levels of designers and non-designers. Proper spacing guides take the guess work out in prototyping and keep the design flow throughout the product.

Feasibility through components

Creating a design system is partly to maintain consistency but it can also improve efficiency and pace drastically. A library of components and elements has allowed the design team to work at a faster pace creating high quality products.

 

Outcomes

This project taught me several things. It gave me the opportunity to study some of the best design systems currently in use, hone my Figma skills, and collaborate and learn from the Itemize team. In the beginning, there was resistance to creating a design system. As a designer, it began to pay off for me immediately by allowing me to create mockups in a fraction of the time.

The Itemize Design System is now being used to build out the product suite.
